Gerard was driving through a small village in Italy, his elbows resting on the steering wheel as he expertly rolled a cigarette. As he puffed on the smoke, he navigated the narrow streets with ease. After a while, it became clear that we were heading up a mountain pass. Gerard, now working on his second cigarette, told me that this was his favorite drive in all of southern Europe.
